What Does Rebar Have To Do With The Damage Of My Home’s Foundation?

Rebar (short for reinforcing bar) is collectively known as reinforcing steel and reinforcement steel, it is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures to strengthen and hold the concrete in compression. Concrete is strong under compression, but has weak tensile strength. Rebar significantly increases the tensile strength of the structure. Rebar’s surface is often patterned to form a better bond with the concrete. – Thank You Wikipedia

Most, if not all, foundations have rebar in them to provide additional strength and stability and if you maintain your home’s foundation it should last for a very long time without any problems or signs of damage.

There are a few reasons your foundation can start to fail and show serious signs of failure. The major leading cause is simply water and trapped moisture. If your foundation is not waterproofed thoroughly water can begin to saturate the concrete and penetrate it and start to attack the steel rebar inside.

It is a common fact that steel and water do not work well together and as the water continues to attack the rebar it will start to rust and oxidize. As this happens it will begin to expand and create internal pressure in the stem wall of the foundation.

Over time as the rebar continues to oxidize and rust the pressure will continue to build and the stem wall will start to show signs of cracks and will begin to crumble.

The damage will only continue to spread and your foundation will become weaker and weaker and the structural integrity will eventually will become a bigger concern and will fail if is not repaired properly. The best advice is to have it repaired at the first signs of cracks and spalling.
