Avoid Additional Repairs – Know What Type of Foundation You Have

Before you have any major remodeling project or renovations done to your home you will want to know everything you can about the project.

Hiring the right contractors is important and you want to make sure they are skilled, qualified and have common sense.

Recently we had a customer that had some plumbing work done to their home. On this particular project a new drain had to be installed. In order to do this the plumber needed to cut a path in the floor in order to install the pipes. This involved cutting into the floor in order to install the new pipes.

Sadly this contractor knew little about foundations and cut into a post tension foundation which is the biggest mistake you can make. This could not of been easy, concrete saws are powerful and designed to cut concrete not steel cables.

Post tension foundations have steel cables in them to provide structural integrity and are there for a reason. This contractor should of checked for any stamps before trying to cut into the foundation.

Every post tension foundation has a stamp that clearly warns of the danger of cutting into it.

This contractor should of stopped at the first sign of problems and is lucky no one was injured. Cutting through a 1/2 steel cable with a concrete saw is not easy and they should of noticed a problem when they had to force the saw to cut through the first one but didn’t and clearly had little experience with that piece of equipment.

On this job they managed to cut 5 of the post tension cables and thought nothing of it until it was too late.

The homeowner then contacted us to come out and restore / repair the damage the plumbing contractor had caused and was not very happy when we explained for scope of damage and what it would cost to repair it.

This could of easily been avoided by hiring the right contractor with the right knowledge.
