Stem Wall Foundation Cracks
The cost of having your foundation repaired properly can vary depending upon the extent of the damage. Cracks in your home’s foundation can be a very serious issue and once it begins it is not something that will stop or go away on its own. The longer you neglect the issue the worse it will become and the more costly it will be to fix the problem.
Stem walls have what is called rebar inside them.
Rebar (short for reinforcing bar), also known as reinforcing steel, reinforcement steel a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures to strengthen and hold the concrete in tension. Rebar’s surface is often patterned to form a better bond with the concrete.
Foundation cracks are caused when water penetrates the stem wall concrete and attacks the steel bar. The steel begins to rust and as it rust more and more it begins to expand and push out the concrete and over time the pressure builds up more and more until the concrete gives and starts to crack on the surface. Once this starts to happen the crack will continue to grow and grow and simply filling in the crack will not prevent further damage or fix the problem.
